Syracuse is an Italian town of 123.448 inhabitants, the capital of the province of Syracuse in Sicily.

Position of the municipality of Siracusa in the province of Syracuse.

Located on the south-eastern coast of the island, it is the fourth largest city in Sicily by population, after Palermo, Catania and Messina.

Already defined by Cicero "the greatest and most beautiful of all the Greek cities", since 2005, together with the rock necropolis of Pantalica, it has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The name Syracuse derives from the Sicilian Syraka (abundance of water) due to the presence of many watercourses and a marshy area. Both in Greek and in Latin it is in the plural, Syracusae, because the city founded by Archia, a nobleman of Corinth in 734 BC, became in a few years the Pentāpoli as the original nucleus, established on the island of Ortigia, were added as more four nuclei: Acradina, Tiche, Neāpoli and Epipoli.
